Lately I have been spending time in Ephesians. It’s a dynamic book that gives us a lot of great input for our Christian journey. First off please look at Ephesians 2:1-9.
Paul begins by describing humanity as spiritually dead—not sick, not struggling, but dead in sin (v.1). That’s a condition beyond self-repair. Grace enters as God’s initiative, not ours.
- “But God, being rich in mercy…” (v.4) signals a divine rescue.
- Grace is God’s unearned favor, extended to the undeserving.
- It’s not a reward for effort—it’s a resurrection for the lifeless.
Take a moment to reflect on the power of these truths. Humanity was dead and uncapable of rectifying its situation. BUT God was not only able, He desired to redeem us from death and bring us into the fulness of life with Him. This is amazing! This truth should make us smile every day!!
Verses 8–9 are crystal clear on this point of God’s gift of redemption, His redemption of men from death into life:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith… not of works, so that no one may boast.”
This dismantles any notion of spiritual meritocracy.
- Grace levels the playing field—no one earns it, so no one can boast.
- It’s a gift, not a wage.
- Faith is the channel, but grace is the source.
At verse 10 we see a shift, a shift that shows this amazing new life we have because of God’s gift of grace as an empowerment for purpose. Now look at this, this is amazing and powerful!
“We are His workmanship… created for good works…”
Grace doesn’t just save—it recreates. Did you get that?! Think about this for a moment as it is truly a transformative truth.
- You’re not just forgiven, you’re re-formed.
- Grace empowers you to walk in prepared good works.
- The Greek word poiēma (workmanship) implies artistry—you’re God’s masterpiece.
Grace is the brushstroke that turns brokenness into beauty. It turns you from death into life. YOU are God’s masterpiece!
Ephesians 2 is a powerful chapter. There are several statements in this article that could transform how you see yourself and how you function in this world. We see in Ephesians 2 what God has done for humanity and how He views us. We do well to see ourselves the same may God sees us!
Go back in this article to a statement that stuck out to you. Take that statement and ponder, consider and reflect on how God’s view in that statement impacts your life. Let it soak in and make a difference in your life.
